In April of 2014, after fourteen years of waiting on God’s perfect timing, including three years of construction by volunteer mission teams, Lamp House Coffee opened its doors hoping to provide locals a few jobs and a world-class gourmet coffee shop where they could meet, eat, and experience the love of God.
Sissy and Eric Rutherford manage the shop, which features specialty coffees, frappes, flavored lattes; baked goods, snack foods, sandwiches and homemade soups for lunch; and, cooked-to-order breakfast. (See our menu online in PDF format.)
HOPE & OPPORTUNITIES – The shop is nestled in the the historic city of Lynch, KY and sits (literally) over Looney Creek, across from the historic Portal 31 exhibition mine. God is using this quaint, little shop as a friendly meeting place; and affords us an opportunity to share the Good News of Jesus Christ with thousands of people each year, while also presenting a new business – and job opportunities – for the people of Lynch and the surrounding communities. The shop is part of the Meridzo Center Development Corporation, which has created more than 30 jobs in the first five years of its existence.
Because God’s plans are always bigger and better than our own, we should not have been surprised when He began reaching clear across the country through this tiny building “on the way to nowhere.”
REACHING BEYOND OUR COMMUNITY – Christian coffee shop start-ups have reached out to us from all over the country, both here in Kentucky, Tennessee, and the Carolinas, and from as far away as Las Vegas, Nevada, Detroit, Michigan, and even one Native American Reservation in South Dakota. In most cases we simply offer prayer and advice (mostly to wait on and depend on God), but in a couple of cases we have actually hosted full barista training and we wholesale our Coal Miner’s Blend for sale in their shops. (Order Lamp House coffee, shirts and more at our Online store here.)
SECOND CHANCES – We are also seeing lives restored by providing jobs to our Celebrate Recovery program heroes. As they prove to themselves and others that God has truly made a change they are able to demonstrate reliability, trustworthiness, and to rebuild a work history and job reference that is leading to more permanent employment.
COMMUNITY-WIDE EVENTS – The coffee shop has also been proud to sponsor a number of community events such as the annual 4th of July Parade, the Looney Creek Summer Concert Series, and the Lynch 100th Anniversary Car & Motorcycle show (all at no cost) and, a Gingerbread House building competition fundraiser benefiting the city of Lynch.
